Intended Use

For the qualitative determination of antibodies in swine sera, plasma or tissue
fluid to Toxoplasma gondii using the ELISA technique.

Summary

Toxoplasmosis is the disease caused by infection with Toxoplasma gondii. The
disease is widespread in humans, cats and swine but may also be found in other
warm blooded animals. Of the various species that can be infected, only cats
have been found as the natural reservoir of infection where Toxoplasma can
complete its lifecycle. Virtually all wild cats become infected early in their life
and shed infective oocysts in their feces.

Other animals, such as humans and swine, become infected either by ingestion
of infective oocysts from cat feces or from eating infected meat. Ingestion of
rodents by swine is believed to be the primary source of Toxoplasma (as well
as Trichinella) infection in these animals. Thus swine that have exposure to
either barnyard cats or rodents will show a high level of Toxoplasma infection.

Principle of Procedure

During the first incubation, the antibodies in the swine's serum or plasma binds
to the Toxoplasma antigens in the test well. The next incubation then allows the
anti-swine IgG peroxidase complex to bind to the antigen-antibody complex.
After a few washings to remove unbound enzyme, a chromogen is added that
develops a blue color in the presence of the enzyme complex and peroxide. The
stop solution ends the reaction and turns the blue color to yellow.
